Averages and extremes

Excise came back in full at the end of June 2023, and 91 still averaged slightly less than the year before: 262.9c, −5.7c. Path of 91: 243.2c on 6 January, a high of 301.9c on 29 September, a low of 235.8c on 19 May, 265.8c by 29 December. The board moved most on 7 July (+21.1c) and, the other way, on 12 May (−5.7c).

Dubai crude averaged US$82 a barrel in 2023, with the dollar at US61.4 cents. MBIE's importer margin on 91 averaged 35.7c a litre in 2023. The 95 premium over 91 averaged 18.0c in 2023.

The tax share

45% of the average 2023 price of 91 was tax and levies (117.4c a litre). MBIE's 91 taxes-and-levies line in 2023: 55.7c to 62.9c in the week to 30 June; 62.9c to 80.8c in the week to 7 July.
