What moved this week
The national 91 average rose from 315.9c in the week to 18 September 2026 to 334.5c. Diesel moved +21.1c to 308.1c and premium 95 +17.9c to 348.6c. Over four weeks 91 is +36.6c; a year ago, in the week to 26 September 2025, it was 254.9c.
MBIE puts the import cost of a litre of 91 at 183.2c this week and its importer margin at 18.1c, against a 13-week trend of 29.0c. A margin below its trend usually means pump prices have not yet caught up with what the fuel costs to land; the margin between cost and pump explains how MBIE builds that line.
The gate list is the fresher signal. BP's 6 October 2026 postings average 347.4c for 91 and 309.8c for diesel across its terminals, +6.2c and +5.7c on its previous list of 2 October 2026. The cheapest 91 gate is Marsden Point at 343.9c, the dearest Lyttelton at 351.6c: a spread of 7.7c that freight and terminal costs explain. The full board is on prices at each fuel terminal.

Where this week sits
The gate drawn in the header is a five-year scale. Its left post is the cheapest week since 2021, 231.5c (week ending 1 October 2021); the right post is the dearest, 346.8c (week ending 10 April 2026). This week's 91 hangs 89% of the way across. For diesel the same scale runs from 156.0c to 381.0c, and this week sits at 68%.
Every week since April 2004 is kept in 22 years of pump prices, with a page for each year. The spike that set the five-year high is covered week by week in week by week through the crisis.

Excise: next step 1 January 2028
Petrol excise has not moved since July 2020. The Government said on 31 August 2026 that it will rise 5c a litre on 1 January 2028, a smaller step than the 12c once planned for 2027, and that still needs a change in the law (Beehive release, 31 August 2026).

How these figures are put together
Three public sources feed the page. MBIE's weekly monitoring gives the national average pump price for 91, 95 and diesel, built from more than 1,500 stations, together with the import cost, the margin and every tax line. BP and Z Energy publish the price at which they sell fuel to other retailers at each terminal, a duty under the Fuel Industry Act 2020. The Commerce Commission's fortnightly monitoring adds a daily national average as a cross-check.
No official body publishes prices station by station in New Zealand. Pages that show a single station's price rely on drivers reporting it. Gatepost keeps to the published figures and says which week or day each one belongs to. Details are in how the figures are built.
Straight answers
How much is a litre of petrol in NZ this week?
Regular 91 averaged $3.345 a litre in the week to 25 September 2026, premium 95 $3.486 and diesel $3.081, according to MBIE's weekly monitoring.
Why does diesel cost less than 91 at the pump?
Petrol carries 77.2c a litre of excise and levies; diesel carries 0.9c. Diesel vehicles pay road user charges by distance instead, so the pump price leaves out most of their road tax.
Are prices about to go up again?
BP's gate list of 6 October 2026 moved 91 by +6.2c, and the gap between the pump average and the gate was 4.0c in the week to 25 September 2026 against a 13.4c average since May. A narrow gap has tended to be followed by pump rises.
Where does Gatepost get station prices?
It does not publish them. There is no official station-level price feed in New Zealand; the site uses the national weekly average, the published terminal gate prices and the regulator's monitoring.
