Sources and method
Gatepost publishes only figures that a named organisation puts out in public, and says which week or day each one belongs to. This page lists the sources, how often they change and what we do with them.

The weekly pump average
MBIE has monitored fuel prices every week since April 2004. Since May 2025 its retail figures come from Datamine, the company behind the Gaspy app, covering more than 1,500 stations and weighted by regional population. For each of 91, premium 95 and diesel MBIE publishes the board price, an adjusted retail price (the board price less typical discounts), its estimate of the landed import cost, the ETS cost, the taxes and levies, GST and the importer margin that is left over. Gatepost uses the adjusted retail price as the headline, because it is closer to what people pay.
MBIE's own website sits behind an automated bot check that blocks scripts. We do not try to get around it. The same file is republished, unchanged, by Figure.NZ, a New Zealand charity that hosts public data, and that is where our copy comes from; if Figure.NZ is unavailable, the last archived copy of MBIE's file is used and the page says which week it reaches. Recent weeks are marked provisional by MBIE and can be revised.
Terminal gate prices
The Fuel Industry Act 2020 requires every wholesaler with the right to draw fuel from a terminal to post a terminal gate price for 91, premium and diesel, in cents a litre including taxes, with the date, time and terminal. BP posts a PDF that shows its current and previous price at each terminal. Z Energy posts a weekly PDF on Wednesdays, and its earlier lists back to May 2026 remain on the same address, which is how the weekly history was rebuilt. Mobil's list is behind a block for automated readers and is not used.
Several terminals can sit in one port (Mount Maunganui, Seaview and Hutt City, Timaru north and south). Where a supplier lists more than one, Gatepost averages them and shows the result under one name. The map colours each region by the nearest terminal with a published price. That is a distance rule, not a statement about which terminal actually supplies each town.
Signals and comparisons
The gap between the pump and the gate compares MBIE's Friday average with the Z list of the Wednesday before. The outlook page counts how often the pump moved in the expected direction after a given reading, using only weeks that have already happened. It is a description of past behaviour, not a forecast of crude oil or the exchange rate.
The Commerce Commission's daily national average is quoted as a cross-check with its date. Its retail figures come from Gaspy, so they are not republished as a series here. All figures are nominal dollars and cents; nothing is adjusted for inflation.
What is not here, and why
There are no station-by-station prices: no official source publishes them in New Zealand, and Gatepost does not copy prices that apps collect from their users. Corrections are welcome; the page you are on and the figure in question are enough to find it. Data was last checked on 6 October 2026.
