What a terminal gate price is
Under the Fuel Industry Act 2020, every wholesaler that sells fuel from a terminal must post a terminal gate price: the price at which a certified buyer can collect at least 5,000 litres of 91, 95 or diesel there, on a spot basis. BP publishes a new list each time its price moves, often more than once a week. Z Energy publishes every Wednesday.
The gate price includes everything the government takes per litre: excise, the ACC levy, the monitoring levy, the ETS cost and GST. What it leaves out is the retailer's share: trucking to the forecourt, running the station, card fees and profit. In the week to 25 September 2026 the national pump average for 91 sat 4.0c above Z's gate average; since May that gap has averaged 13.4c. will petrol prices go down tracks it week by week.
Terminal prices differ by a few cents because of how fuel reaches each port. Marsden Point, the former refinery, now imports finished fuel and sends it to Wiri through the 170 km Refinery to Auckland Pipeline; the other terminals are supplied by coastal and import tankers.

Why there are no station prices here
New Zealand has no official scheme that makes each station publish its pump price, unlike Western Australia's FuelWatch or the schemes in much of Europe. Apps fill the gap with prices reported by drivers. Gatepost uses only figures that a named organisation publishes, so the regional view rests on the terminal gate, the one price set in public every week for every port.
Each city page shows the terminal that supplies it, how its gate compares with the rest, Z's weekly history for that terminal and the national pump average. For the national picture go back to 91, 95 and diesel this week.
Straight answers
Where is petrol cheapest in New Zealand?
At wholesale, Marsden Point had the lowest 91 gate price on BP's 6 October 2026 list (343.9c). Pump prices vary by station and are not published officially.
Can anyone buy fuel at the terminal gate price?
Only buyers certified by the wholesaler, collecting at least 5,000 litres a load in their own tanker. For motorists it is a benchmark, not a price on offer.
