Path of 91: 136.9c on 2 January, a high of 168.7c on 20 February, a low of 132.0c on 9 January, 162.7c by 25 December. Behind the pump in 2009: Dubai crude at US$61, the kiwi at US63.4 cents. MBIE's importer margin on 91 averaged 13.2c a litre in 2009. The 95 premium over 91 averaged 6.4c in 2009.

What went to tax

Tax lines removed, 45% of the 2009 price goes: 71.4c a litre of 91. Tax changed within 2009. MBIE's 91 tax line shows 52.6c to 53.1c in the week to 3 July; 53.1c to 54.0c in the week to 2 October; 54.0c to 56.1c in the week to 9 October. 58.4c a litre: the 2009 average gap between 91 and diesel. 109.1c on 3 July topped the diesel year; 96.2c on 20 March was its floor.
